KURODA, Suehisa, Dr. Science

Professor, Department of Regional Studies,

School of Human Cultures,

The University of Shiga Prefecture

2500 Hassaka-cho, Hikone-shi, 522-8533 JAPAN

Born in 1947. Obtained a doctorate of Science from Faculty of Science, Kyoto University. After serving as an assistant and an associate professor in the Faculty at the university, from 1994, he holds his current position.

His curiosity in the root of the human society moved him into comparative study of the societies of anthropoids and mankind. He is pursuing the origin of rules and systems in human societies and the emerging processes of symbols, by studying food-sharing, cooperative behaviors and dependent relations in chimpanzees and bonobos (pygmy chimpanzees; Pan paniscus). He is stressing the importance of socio-psychological aspect and role of paedomorphism to understand above issues.

At the same time, he is involved in research on farmers' culture and various local community revitalization programs in Shiga Prefecture.

His books include:

The Pygmy Chimpanzee; the Unknown Ape. (Chikuma Shobo Publishing Co., Ltd., 1982; Ibunsha Co., Ltd. 1999).

A Reconsideration on Human Evolution; an Archeology of Mankind Society Emerging. (Ibunsha Co., Ltd. 1999).

Future of Nature Study; Empathy with Nature. (Koubundou Publishers Inc. 2001).

Walking in Africa. (Ibunsha Co., Ltd., co-written, co-edited, 2002).

The Climate in Regions around the Lake Biwa. (Shibunkaku Co., Ltd., co-written, 2002, Kuroda's chapter; A Scene with Thousands Reservoirs; People and Climate in the special heavy clay region.).

On the Scientific Method (Chuokoron Co., Ltd., co-written, 1987, Kuroda's chapter; From the Whole.), and others.
